Okay so let's say that someone just finished a novel. They go to a publisher, publisher reviews novel, likes it... now what happens? Does the author not get paid until the books start selling? Do they negotiate percentages? If so..

    1. what is an average % a new author might get?
    2. what is a high % a new author might get?
    3. what is the average % a well known author would get?
    4. what is a high % a well known might get?

    Thanks for any help.

Sometimes an advance is given, to be held against future royalities.

The rest should be able to be answered by the publisher or agent. Check around to make sure that what you're quoted is the norm.
