My father recently got injured. He can't work for a couple of weeks and he is our only source of income. I know there is worker's insurance but does that extend to people who are their own boss and have a private business such as a taxi driver?

Worker's Compensation Insurance is paid for by a person's employer. It covers them if they get injured while doing their job.

Your father might be able to apply for State Disability Insurance. He needs to contact the Social Security Office in his area regarding benefits. If he's only going to be unable to work for a couple weeks he may not be eligible. I think there may be a waiting period.

I'm sure he can Google the information regarding SDI benefits.

Unless you have the right kind of money, that pays for the right kind of lawyer, social security, and/or disability can take years.

I'm on year 2, myself. Been trying to get disability, I have about another year or so before my right knee totally gives out.

Your question is very specific, so luckily you should be able to find a clear answer sooner or later. Might I suggest googling a local site on this; I doubt us poets will be the best source of knowledge. Not because we're daft or anything, but because we come from many different places, we haven't all been through it - a local support group will all be local and all be focussed on solving this issue. Good luck.

Private businesses? Anyone who has a private business/works to support themself, should have insurance..even if it's just personal insurance... something to cover expenses in case of sickness/injury, etc. It's just good business sense. There's no workers comp to cover, and welfare wouldn't even make a dent in medical bills (if he has them). Is there any govt. support places in your area? Someplace that would help temporarily?

There are no government support places in my area. Unfortunately he has decided to go back to work early rather than wait until his elbow is better. I'm both disappointed and extremely proud. On one hand he is doing his best to keep everything together and on the other he is risking his own health and the health of others.
