like LULU .....BUT
I have been with Lulu for around 5 years. They have a good program and I used them as the stepping stone to Barnes and Noble and Amazon where I have my books. The one thing I found constantly was the bad lining up of books. I sent my proofs through for printing and they charge $10 to send you the book to proof read. I would spend around $50 before the books were finally right, if ever.Somethimes never exactly laid out as correctly as I send them in. Page margins moved and not lined up. Chapters jumping down pages etc. The bad reproductions caused me expense and also ruined my marketing confidence as I knew the person buying the book may not get a good printed copy. I didn't want that. So although Lulu is great for getting your work out there, it may not deliver your product as you intend it to be.
UPDATE
Lulu have done some amazing things since last year. I have published 2 items within the last month and the service has improved 100% I find it very very easy now. ! Just wanted to update you. -
HMMM Let's hope Jan that they do a good job on Kevin's book with our poems in them.
Love you little Sister.

This is really useful information
I was toying with the idea of LULU - I'm still going to look into it but might well consider a smaller, local press. I suppose it hinges on whether I want a large amount of exposure with less vigilant proofreading, or a bespoke service with a small customer base. -
I Had the same problems
I was trying to do a book with them. But the The material was divided into two pages. And each time I would get them fixed and go back to review the book it would do it again and again. Thank you the interesting info

love lulu
I usd lulu to publish my last book and have been complettyl satisfied...if you take the time to do the research adn read how exactly to have your book set up, you can get great results...if you rush and don't take your time to read the tutorials and have the book set up exactly how it is supposed to be then you can run into edditng problems, but once done correctly it is wonderful! Lulu provides a help line that can walk you through it and they have detaild forums on how to have your manuscript set up accordingly. so if your willing to put in the time you can do it! -

I had to change my entire story to fit a certain page width, with margins, and then go through page by page, making sure that chapters started on a new page, and certain pages. Also had to include a few blank pages at the beginning and end, etc to make the page one on the right hand page since I also included acknowledgements.
You're right that it is a lot of extra work, but it is well worth it. It's not something someone should assume that they can get done in an hour or two.

Lulu
I'm considering using Lulu although I don't have a finished manuscript yet. This is my first book...any suggestions. -
Very useful information
about lulu. I have published a book there, and I did run into that margin and page skipping thingie as indicated above. I did do my research and everything was wonderful in my proofs, but when I got the book, my work ran over to the next page, etc. It was only like this toward the end, but lulu...is aight, just gotta make sure you take a lot of time, because I for one can't afford real publishing right now, but hopefully soon...cause this is a lot of hard work.

I have two books published by Lulu
The formatting is everything. And you can download a PDF of exactly how your book will be.
It does take time and patience...but...Geez!
You are publishing a book!!!! The only thing they can't get right now is the colors of my next book.
I love lulu...and am getting ready to publish a poetry book. The other two are sci-fiction. -
Happy with lulu
The formatting is no small feat. If you have no special fonts or anything fancy inside, you don't need to convert it to a PDF yourself but you are very likely going to have to reload it once you have your book in hand and can see formatting errors.
I just published my 7th book with lulu, this time a collection of 18 AP poets and 30 flickr photographers celebrating the world wonders - it's called "Sentinels", but we had to make our own PDF because we used a square book format and a special font type that could not be read by lulu converters.
I had had complaints that the coffee anthology I put out ("Brother, My Cup", which included poems from many AP poets) was falling apart, so I had taken it down temporarily. But after waiting a year and putting out two more books at lulu, I have not had any more complaints and have put it back up.
I think lulu quality is superior to the two other presses I have tried in the past, especially for having full page color capability. (Of course, it's a lot more expensive per page; even the pages without color cost more than double a black and white interior.) For me, it's well worth it to be able to include art and photos.

interesting
I have published a book with Dorrance Publishers in Pittsburg and used the cheaper contract which is called Readleadpress, and I got terrific results and for a mimimum cost, but you do your own editing, they have their own book site
www.redleadbooks.com, also the book is
advertised on Amazon.ca in poetry..called
"poems for all seasons"has 429 poems..
My next poetry book I was thinking with Lulu as we publish for free,, and thanks for the suggestion to make sure of pagination and the
proper size..in word i have put my work in the size of page it needs to be shown on before hand..but I will certainly look into the help guides..thanks for the info .. -

You will have to pay a fee if you want lulu to advertise your product on amazon...
I have had some complaints of orders not going through and it even happened to me that they could not process the order, for some reason, at the time I was placing it. I got a live chat helper to try to figure it out with me - and she could not - and then she said lulu would contact me and they never have. The result is I lost my motivation to bother to order anything.
It is a big flaw that they don't take phone orders, because many people don't have fast enough internet service to even download the pages and can't stay on so long trying to figure out why their order is not going through.
Anyone else having this problem?

i just did a book with LuLu
I just did a small run with LuLu. I had tried another publisher but I wanted more for my money. The service is great and the books look good. Only thing is they didn't take Open Office so I had to change to MS Word but, other than that I am happy. -
I'm way too young :P
I'm only 11, but I have been writing poems for a while and I am trying to figure out how old you have to be to publish a book. I have a poetry book and I carry it around with me everywhere just incase I get inspired. I have been thinking about LuLu when I get older, but I don't know if it will work out so well, as I have heard. Also, I don't have much money at this point, so is there any suggestions about cheap ways to publish?? -
I have just published my first book with LuLu and I am really pleased. I found it really easy to do and and after reviewing, was able to put right the few mistakes that I had made. Also for a short while they are giving ISBN numbers for free which is an added bonus that saves a lot of money. I am well pleased.

What? Free ISBN?
*running to Lulu*
ahhh
Published By Lulu - $0.00
In addition to selling your work on Lulu.com, Published By Lulu allows you to make your work available to retailers worldwide. Online retailers, such as Amazon.com, can order the work, as a result of being included in the bibliographic feeds Lulu provides. Formerly titled 'Global Distribution,' Published By Lulu will assign a Lulu-owned ISBN to your work and Lulu will be registered as the official publisher of your work. By selecting Published By Lulu you give Lulu non-exclusive rights to sell and distribute your work, however, as always on Lulu, you retain the copyright as the creator.
We recommend Published By Lulu if you want your work to be sold on Amazon and elsewhere but do not care to retain any publisher rights under this ISBN.

We used lulu again this summer to do a small run of my poems for my father's memorial service; used staples rather than "perfect bound" and it was very reasonable; only 3.00/book (with no mark up of profit on our part.) I was very satisfied with it.
I did ask them to stop listing my stuff on amazon at that huge mark-up that they add (which started last spring.) I just think people can get the books reasonably priced directly from lulu.
Then they asked me if they could continue to list the RGBs and take the mark-up off. I said yes but never checked it again. I never get any money from lulu because nothing is marked up for profit from my side.
(As a curious aside; Lulu is now running Poetry.com; it has been turned into lulupoetry.)

I frankly just paid them to do it, I would have had no idea how to do it myself....

What I found out finally is that it is better to let LULU do the PDF instead of you trying to set it before you load it on their site. Simply because if you have selected 8 x 10 for example, then it should convert well as an 8 x 10. Just make sure you upload in the correct page size and format you want to use in you book. The Correct Size of your work BEFORE you start typing it in. that way you don't have page jumps etc. Since my initial message here, I have done around 10+ books with Lulu and the more I did the easier it became.
