If you are VERY early in your efforts to be published and seek concrete advice or are already sucessful read on.

My approach was first to join a local writers group. The workshopping was very helpfull. Then I submitted poems to some local and regional publications and was published in some local papers and magizines.

Then I started doing open mics and slams. I won a regional poetry jam which opened further doors and led to more press. Then I joined another poetry site. There, I met someone who brought me here. This man turned into a mentor of the highest caliber.[he even wrote the forward to my book and edited the whole thing.]

I entered, and placed in a well regarded writing contest that offered the chance to travel and do a reading of higher regard than the local ones and led to the publication of the winning piece.

Now I have begun to submit to better poetry and literature magazines.[ I am published in the current issues of Free Verse Magazine and Falling Star Magazine.] I have work on ezines and web sites as well.

As my acceptance rate stands at about 85%,
I was encouraged to create a manuscript. I am now torn between self-publishing at my own expense, publishing through a pod that gets me copies to sell or submit to "real" publishers, or start paying assistant editors twenty-five bucks each to read it for publishers or contests.

If you are at an earlier stage of development and seeking advice, or are more sucessful and have advice for me, IM me. I would be glad to get or give advice.[why I'm here, really.]
