That all depends, do you mean currently or eventually? Aside from that, it also depends on where it is that you wish to be published. Not sure what you mean by a sponsor, though I would be willing to give you honest feedback, assuming that's what you're looking for.

I got my first poem published at 15. It has nothing to do with age, only the quality of your work.

What do you mean when you say you are looking for a sponser?

Probably wants someone else to write the poem for him/her and they just stick their name on it and say they wrote it.

Well, i might have missed the sarcasm, if it was intended, but when u sponsor someone, it means u help pay for it.....

I read a few of your poems: you're not ready for the "get paid for publishing" world. 5 years, perhaps.

Hi, I recently submitted my work...

to publishamerica.com and was rejected, because my work posted on AllPoetry is already considered to be published, I found this out the hard way. Now you can still be published, but you can't have your work online or anywhere for that matter while in the process.

      Hope this helps you out.

I'm almost positive that publishamerica.com is a scam.

There's some site with "america" in it that is a scam. I just forget which site that would be.

They're a Print on Demand company, similar to lulu.com, and all the others... BUT... "You sign over your publishing rights for seven years. So if Random House comes knocking, PublishAmerica negotiates your deal and keeps half the proceeds." With other POD/vanity publishers, the publishing rights are yours.

PublishAmerica is not looked upon kindly by others.... although, there are those that will praise it until the end of time.

          (I got the "" part from http://leegoldberg.typepad.com/a_writers_life/2005/01/the_publishamer.html )

I actually was accepted by PublishAmerica but when I wouldn't conform to editing my work to the way they wanted it to be edited (you know, no spacing, grammar in which they wished it to be etc.,) they canceled the contract, and gave another reason and not that one.

Oh well. I guess I will be stuck with places like lulu.com - I can live with that.

It's really hard to be rejected by publishamerica. They are one of the most greedy vanity presses I have ever seen.

As far as having your work posted online, every poem I've ever published was posted here before it was published. I've even had 4 different publishers approach me and ask to publish poems that they read on here.

Check this poem out…the before with the reviews and the after....being a writer is all about expanding your ability to produce great work and also take criticism.

Start by submitting to local poetry magazines and journals. Once you have a few works published there, you can submit a CV and sample of work to an agent, or send a small press (maybe linked to one of the magazines) a synopsis/idea for a pamphlet or collection.

You probably won't make money out of it but will be published. If you want to support yourself through poetry, you need to do the above, gain an name for yourself and run workshops etc'.

If you are willing to take to those who are critiquers such as myself (civil but honest) and actually consider such advice and suggestions; I'd say about 2-5 years. Unless vanity is all you want, then, you can do that now at lulu.com for free.

Wacoti... and all who are curious:

I am a twice published author.

For anybody in here who wants to be published by a real company, never pay them money to publish you.

http://publishamerica.com is a great site for that. They just published my book called One Envision, you can buy on amazon.com or request in bookstores starting November 5th!

You have to be 18. That's because of legalities that 16 year olds aren't able to obtain.

Because you are a legal adult, you are able to be a published author, so you can accept royalties.

If you're looking to self publish, try http://lulu.com

You can also use google and search for publishers in your town, city or state.

If you have any questions, please message me! ~ Kerri

In the UK (and indeed the US) you can recieve royalties at any age and most agents will take on younger writers, if appropriate.

The only people you should expect to pay when looking to be published are contest entries; the costs cover admin, the prize fund and so on. These are usually about £3 ($5) per poem- no more.

PublishAmerica only publishes those they feel will make them money. They're quite upfront about that. Also, they tend to want it to be of quality in which reflects them more than the author - this opinion based on my own experience with my acceptance, and then cancellation because of the way I write, they didn't like yet they loved my work. Is that ironic?

    ^^ i got my first poem published back when I was eight. o.o; I know, then again in eighth. Why not try something; my school does asperations every year. Ask a teacher about it if you don't find anything. Or you can make your own and find someone like an agent or something. Or someone you know that can help you get it done. >_>;

Was it with http://poetry.com - or any of their affiliates? Because if it was, that doesn't really count - they publish everyone (as long as they pay, and if they don't pay they don't publish - even if they say they do).

As far as getting published goes, in this day and age of cyber publication, anybody can get anything "published" if they try hard enough. It is up to you to decide if you want to be published by just anybody or if you want to be published in reputable journals. Being published online counts in your bio as much as any other publication. Places that give away writing grants or fellowships count online publication, but often expect the applicants to be published in print as much as they are online. Here is a link to several reputable publishers. At the time I posted it, all the links worked, but it has been a couple of years, so let me know if you find any that don't work while you go through them. Be sure to follow the guidelines for submissions. All magazines have their own way of doing things. Also, be sure that you submit poetry appropriate to the place you choose to submit.

You keep the rights...and you don't have to even buy one copy if you don't want...but i'm sure you
want a copy..lol......An average sized book (130pgs.) Is around seven dollars....you can link to lulu and sell on line without paying any money.
I really love lulu. Alot of the poetry places are just scams...so be careful. If you want any more info....im me anytime...

of course you can get published- unless your writing is horrendous and does not address a public need... but let's say it does, and you're the greatest poet since Ovid... your chances are still 1/1,000,000... for getting an agent and publisher is as much a game as anything else... and let's say you get published, the odds anyone will buy your book are about the same... let's say your book sells phenomenally well, you are STILL on a crowded celebrity bus, jostling for Oprah interviews and Vanity Fair cover stories, tearing out each other's hair...!
  • You don't need a sponsor. If it costs money it is subsidy publishing or a scam. I would suggest that you check out online newspapers and e-zines. Some will even pay you for your work. Age doesnt matter but if you publish on a teen site be careful about copyright laws because a lot of the teen publishers try to take the rights to the work assuming that children don't know how to protect themselves. for more info contact me at kakkorot13@yahoo.com
    questions are, of course, welcomed.

Not sure if this is the right place to start, just searching for answers to how I can go about getting some of my poetry published. I've had comments from other poets on AP who say I should publish my work. I do have in mind to put together a book of my poems but not sure how to go about it. I write mostly dark and so I guess not to everyones taste, still I would like to think that there might be a market out there somewhere for what I write. Or am I just living in wasted hope?
  • For everyone asking this question; please see my column "How to Get Published" on storywrite (I don't mean this as self-promotion; it's just too difficult for me to repeat myself in every "how do I get published?" topic, so I wrote the answer in a column and am directing people there instead).
