I'm getting together of collection of poems which I would love to try to get published. My poems are pretty much autobiographical and about angst, hope, love, feelings in general, some funny ones. All this is new to me though. I've only been writing poems these past couple of months but I've had some great feedback. How does one go about contacting publishers and which ones? Any advice would be appreciated.

Poetry is an extremely hard subject to get published (unless you're a pop singer). Unless you basically self-publish, I suggest just scouring the markets online and see who accepts them.

I self published my first book, actually a group of people got together and paid for the book to be published. :) The book is titled "A Poet's Last Stand" www.apoetslaststand.com
With my second book I came up with idea of putting the book in Adobe Acrobat format (PDF) and burning it on a CD to market.
I have worked with teachers in both Russia and Nepal that translate and teach my poetry to their students. ( This will be happening at a university in India this year as well.) The first book sells for $12.95. This doesn't seem like a lot of money butwhen you consider the teacher in Nepal makes around $500 to $600 a month and the teacher in Russia about the same, it really does. When Bam in Nepal wrote me saying he was trying to save up enough money to buy a copy for his school it woke me up to this problem. I signed and sent him two copies of the book, one for him and one for his school. I did the same for Dina in Russia as well.
Anyway, I put my second book on the CD, registered it with the Library of Congress, and have been selling and shipping it out myself. To date there are about 1000 copies out there all over this planet.
(Poetic Voices Magazine actually published an article I wrote about this.)
I have just finished my third book, it is currently under review by two of my editors. I plan on doing the same thing with it as well.
I did have hopes of maybe someday getting picked up by a major publishing company but with poetry this is VERY rare.
In my case it is far more important that I try and get the poetry to the people that want and sometimes need to read it.
To date I have heard from over 100 people that have quit drinking with the help of three of my poems and from over 30 that have decided not to kill themself with the help of another. (This includes a 15 year old niece of mine a couple of months ago.)
Some of the most important things in life should never be about money. To me, poetry is close to the top of this list.
Feel free to e-mail me if you would like help doing this.
