a rose in my front yard getting kissed
by our first snowfall of the year.
This is the winner of gold in a prompt contest I had
The prompt was the picture.
Does the rose search for summer, beneath winter snow
or does winter seek life, in the roots far below.
Petals tight closed wait for the sun
betrayed, forgotten, ignored
wearing a crown of tomorrow
as it waits for a dawn unexplored.
Too late for the rose now remembers
to sleep and in sorrow to wait
for the birth of a dream still unwoken
the touch of a god will create.
To bloom once again, be a rose
to blossom beneath golden sun
yet first drink deep of the winter
alas summer, as yet, not begun.
