My poems "cook" for quite awhile.
I begin by noting a feeling that I may be writing a poem soon...
Usually, a word or phrase will gleam out, then it's all just hang-on-and-write-what-comes.
I do a little "fixing" from time to time but I feel that happens because I wasn't "listening" well enough...
