I'm not a poet. I don't sit in coffee shops and sip black coffee with a beret balancing precariously atop my head. Hats look bad on me.
I'm not a poet. Words don't simply drip from my fingertips like water from a leaky faucet. No, I have to search for them and once I find them they don't always fit. So as you can see, I'm not a natural.
I'm not a poet. My name is Melanie, not Shakespeare or Poe...it just doesn't have that same dark, mysterious ring so necessary for all of the great poets.
I'm not a poet. Generally, I'm happy, and as far as I've seen, most poets have tainted pasts, scars that haunt each word of every poem. I was raised in the midwest in a healthy, middle-class family. And that's what scares me the most.
No matter how often I try to convince myself that poetry isn't for me, I fall back on it like a familiar pillow. It feels good. It's worn and simple and somehow perfect.
I'm not a poet: I just write what I feel, what's on my mind, and oftentimes, what's completely irrelevant.
Maybe one day, I'll convince myself that it's poetry.
But until then, I'm just your average college-bound teenage mid-western wreck.
And that's the way I like it.
