As most of you know, I’ve been trying this silent thing for a couple days now. Turns out its pretty difficult.
Some interesting things that I found are:
- People think that just because you’re not talking, you must be sad.
- People forget that you can still hear just because you’re not talking.
- People are nicer when they think you’re deaf.
- You can shift through the meaningless things about conversation, because if you’re only writing things, you’re not going to take the time to write something unless it’s important.
My book was ‘I Cant Tell You’ by Hillary Frank.
Summary: Jake accidentally spills something that he shouldn’t have to his best friend Sean. When Sean stops talking to him, Jake decides that everything that comes out of his mouth is wrong, so he becomes an elective mute. Jake starts hanging out with his friend Xandra, whom he has a major crush on. As the two of them grow closer through notes to each other, Jake ponders how to tell Xandra how he really feels.
Author info: Hillary Frank is a freelance writer and artist, who lives in Chicago. She is the author of two illustrated novels: Better Than Running at Night and I Can't Tell You. Hillary is also an independent producer for a variety of programs on public radio.
Literary Devices: The whole book is written in a series of notes written between Jake and his friends. -
