A few favorite poems, all very old.

I Left My Low And Humble Home

I left my low and humble home
Far from my Father's fields to roam
My peacefull cot no more had charms,
My only joy was War's alarms.
I panted for the field of fight
I gaz'd upon the deathless light,
Which o'er the Hero's grave is shed,
The glorious memory of the dead.
Ambition Show'd a distant star,
That shed its radiance bright and far,
And pointed to a path which led
O'er heaps of dying and of dead;
Onward I press'd with eager feet,
And War's dread thunder still would greet
My reckless ears. Where'er I trod,
I saw the green and verdant sod,
Turn red with blood of slaughter'd foes,
And fury veil'd in smoke arose,
I gain'd the envied height; and there,
I sigh'd for that lone cottage, where
The early hours of life flew by,
On wings of youthfull ecstasy.
Too late I found that Glory's ray,
Could never bring one happy day.

-- Nathaniel Hawthorne

Earthly Pomp

Oh, earthly pomp is but a dream
And like a meteor's short-lived gleam;
And all the sons of glory soon
Will rest beneath the mould'ring stone.
And Genius is a star whose light
Is soon to sink in endless night,
And heavenly beauty's angel form
Will bend like flower in winter's storm.

-- Nathaniel Hawthorne

Alone

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were-- I have not seen
As others saw-- I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I lov'd, I lov'd alone.
Then-- in my childhood-- in the dawn
Of a most stormy life-- was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that 'round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold--
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by--
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When all of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

-- Edgar Allan Poe

Ps. (Post script) Please forgive me if I say
something that disargees with your keen senses,
for I mean no harm. It is my disatvantage
to not see in the proper light at times.
I am forever striving to learn the proper
techneiques of classic form, always the eternal

a happy life in the service industry, now there's a novel thought! (as much as it has been slammed lately, and even though Spongebob has covered it in his own way, I'd do it a bit differently)... coffeemonger? hey, I had a contest on ordering a cup of latte... (poetically, of course) I've been thinking about follow-ups until I have an entire book...
nice old poetry, I see nothing much has changed since Hawthorne, just more of it... and a thinking piece from Poe- with his demon at the end! (I had skeleton heads floating between my crib bars as a baby, but I was forced to reason them away...) a fond piece of old poetry for me is Robert Burn's "The Twa Dogs"...
