Long Winter by Rowan
There is emetic element
within white snow fire-
a sick kind of longing
to be that beautiful.
Not as painful as loneliness
but quicker thrust-
sharp sink to stomach
to an unshaped sigh-
when mouth is ajar
but empty. Cathartic
like press of my face
to cold burn of winter
when fingers talk for me
in condensation streaks-
words pulled from water
all look the same
but taste of old suppers
and stale cigarettes. Stroke
wet-dirty tips to crepe
spread of lips to
mouth a scream
against glass, then peer
into that silent round- now
a frame for today
inspissated muddle
of mind over no matter
as I squash syllables
like slow-moving bugs
soft pop and squish
of nothing more to say
and this poetic dissension
to think otherwise.
