SuzianneShow poetry

I am Susan Donahue, a Chicago native who has recently relocated to Rogers, Arkansas in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains.  I taught genre fiction at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, but my interests are more in poetry than popular fiction. I look forward to practicing my craft here and taking some classes at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Some poetry is meant for the page. Other poetry is meant to be spoken in the tradition of ancient bards who gathered around stone circles and beatniks who recited their verses to the sound of cool jazz in 1950's coffee houses. Let's encourage poets at All Poetry to take their writing beyond this place and to gather in their own communities to share the gift of poetry.

Things to remember when writing:

I am trying to live up to what John Wesley bid his followers to do: "Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the time you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can"

Good advice:   " The good poem maintains a delicate balance between strangeness and familiarity.   The author must make the familiar strange enough to be re-seen or re-felt by the reader.   The truth is always a little strange because the conventional world has little interest in the truth, and regularly accepts packaged versions of it.   But a poet should never be strange for the sake of being strange; the purveyor of such poems is at heart a sensationalist, and is insufficiently interested in the human condition.”   ~ Stephen Dunn

More good advice :  "All languages have grammatical rules, especially regarding the written word. This is simply because if what we say is not received as intended, communication can become very cumbersome, and often costly. We all make mistakes in the way we express ourselves. That does not mean that we completely abandon accurate grammar in any language."  ~ Trevor Harris

Words to live by:   " Fill your mind with those things that are good and that deserve praise; things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely and honorable ." ~ Philippians 4:8 TEV

  • Sakwayi : Thank you for the welcome!! on August 25, 2008
I'm sure I will be lost in this site for hours on the weekends, and, some nights. Some sites you come across by "chance" (if you believe in that - there is no coincidence!) and can't seem to leave....so I didn't!
