~Ozymandias~ By: Percy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desart... Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that it's sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

What makes a writer?

The call of the pen and paper is great, especially to a writer. An empty journal is almost irresistible to the wordsmith. To those of us who dream of Wadsworth, Longfellow, Hemingway and Austin, writing is a calling, a passion not to be ignored. But what does writing really mean to the writer?

I think writing and words are different things to different people. To delve into the various purposes and machinations behind writers is too deep a topic to even begin, but perhaps a glimpse into one writer's mind and heart will give light to others'.

One of the greatest gifts a person can give is his voice. It is a gift that people the world over crave. How many people have spent years searching for the words of famous historical figures? What are the odds a person can give a quote from one of Shakespeare's plays? How many people crave the stories of things their grandparents and great-grandparents said and did? Do people facing difficult choices not desire most the advice of a trusted friend?

It is in one's voice that we learn about a person. Perhaps their words do not always speak truth about their hearts, but nevertheless, we crave to hear them. A person's voice can have a powerful effect on others.

Consider Adolf Hitler who is said to have had a captivating voice. He was able to bring people to their knees and to stir up great crowds with only his voice.

Or look at Martin Luther King, Jr. His "I Have A Dream" speech has been played in classrooms across the nation. He is hailed in speech classes as one of the greatest public speakers in history.

Writing reflects a person's voice. It is a more permanent way of recording what a person has to say, and while voice inflections, laughter and stammering are not a part of writing, the writer's heart is revealed through what he writes.

That is why I write. I want to leave my voice for those who come after me. Perhaps no one will care. It doesn't matter to me. Because I know people who have struggled with never hearing a loved one's voice again, who haven't a recording or a single diary to remember them by, I write. I might never leave someone to mourn my loss, but I want to say I was thinking ahead.

This is no great wisdom on my part. It is simply my wish that I be able to contribute something to this world. I want to be able to say I've left something of a legacy behind.

Perhaps I am selfish. I do not ask anyone to read my words, but I know that if I can leave my voice behind, it might impact just one person. And that is far more reward than I deserve.

Facts About Me

*I am a Christian. I don't feel the need to flaunt it, but truth is that I believe in Jesus Christ as my Savior. If you feel that we can't be friends or that I can't appreciate you because of my beliefs, I'm sorry; I have friends of all different backgrounds, beliefs and lifestyles, and I feel that it's your choice what you believe. So, treat me as you will, and I'll do my best to give you the treatment I'd expect to receive from anyone.*

*I am a college student. I go to a public university and am a double major in business and journalism. I'm currently in my third year of school with the hopes that I'll graduate by my fifth year. Who knows if this will actually happen or not? I certainly don't.*

*I do have a job, but it's not the typical college student job. I work as a stringer for a local community newspaper. It's fun and entertaining because it's not located in one building, nor do I work certain hours. I meet lots of people, take my own pictures and generally enjoy writing the community-oriented stories that I do.*

*I have a supportive family and a ton of good friends who love me very deeply. It's a struggle to believe it some days, but the truth is that God has blessed me with my loving parents and my amazing friends. I will forever be thankful for what He has given me in these people I'm surrounded by.*

*I'm an only child. Yes, that means I'm spoiled. Yes, that means I'm used to getting my own way. And, yes, that means I don't like to share. I own up to it, and I have no problems with it. I always wanted an older brother, I admit, but God saw fit to leave me as I am. So, I'm sure that there's a reason for it, and I know that it's good for me to be an only child.*

*I live at home. Ok, so that's not cool considering I'm in my third year of school. However, as a business student, I've learned to weigh my living arrangements not by the particular popularity of them but by the monetary value therein. Because of that, I firmly feel that living at home is cheaper and provides me everything I need, and I don't have to put as much money into monthly living expenses I would accrue were I to reside on campus or in an apartment. So, I have no problems whatsoever with living at home.*

"Memories are a treasure you should never let go." -Danae Jacobson

"Some people haven't been rescued because they've never yelled 'help!'" -Martha Bolton *How I wish I'd yelled for help earlier!*
