PrevinShow poetry

The first poem i ever wrote is 'the song the meadowlark sang' followed immediately thereafter by 'ode to the essence of woman'. The words just came to me from nowhere. It was as if my subconscious found the words to express what was within me. Moments of inspiration strike me suddenly and I just grab a pen and page and start scribbling. Though somewhat frustratingly, I find these moments usually strike me when a pen and paper is not at hand and thus some of my best works are lost to the place where forgotten thoughts go. Ah well, I guess I will just keep soldiering on and hope they return to me at more convenient times.

Because She Would Ask Me Why I Loved Her
by Christopher Brennan

If questioning would make us wise
No eyes would ever gaze in eyes
If all our tales were told in speech
No mouths would wander each to each
Were spirits free from mortal mesh
And love not bound in hearts of flesh
No aching breasts would yearn to meet
And find their ecstasy complete
For who is there that lives and knows
The secret powers by which he grows?
Were knowledge all, what were our need
To thrill and faint and sweetly bleed?
Then seek not, sweet, the “If” and “Why”
I love you now until I die
For I must love because I live
And life in me is what you give.

"This is the circus of Dr. Lao.
We show you things that you don't know.
We tell you of places you'll never go.
We've searched the world both high and low
To capture the beasts for this marvelous show
From mountains where maddened winds did blow
To islands where zephyrs breathed sweet and low.
Oh, we've spared no pains and we've spared no dough;
And we've dug at the secrets of long ago;
And we've risen to Heaven and plunged Below,
For we wanted to make it one hell of a show.
And the things you'll see in your brains will glow
Long past the time when the winter snow
Has frozen the summer's furbelow.
For this is the circus of Dr. Lao.
And youth may come and age may go;
But no more circuses like this show!"

--The Circus of Dr. Lao,
Charles G. Finney

Fragments from Auguries of Innocence

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

A Robin Redbreast in a Cage
Puts all Heaven in a Rage.
A dove house fill’d with doves and pigeons
Shudders Hell thro’ all its regions.
A Dog starv’d at his Master’s Gate
Predicts the ruin of the State.
A Horse misus’d upon the Road
Calls to Heaven for Human blood.
Each outcry of the hunted Hare
A fiber from the Brain does tear.

He who shall train the Horse to War
Shall never pass the Polar Bar.
The Beggar’s Dog and Widow’s Cat,
Feed them and thou wilt grow fat.
The Gnat that sings his Summer song
Poison gets from Slander’s tongue.
The poison of the Snake and Newt
Is the sweat of Envy’s Foot.

A truth that’s told with bad intent
Beats all the Lies you can invent.
It is right it should be so;
Man was made for Joy and Woe;
And when this we rightly know
Thro’ the World we safely go.

Every Night and every Morn
Some to Misery are Born.
Every Morn and every Night
Some are Born to sweet delight.
Some are Born to sweet delight,
Some are Born to Endless Night.

William Blake

One of my favourite quotes is:

"The most important things are the hardest things to say. They are the things you get ashamed of because words diminish your feelings - words shrink things that seem timeless when they are in your head to no more than living size when they are brought out"... Stephen King

"I may not get to see you as often as I'd like. I may not get to hold you in my arms every night. But no matter what I do, I know it's true, I'm in love with you."

"You may hold my hand for a while, but you hold my heart forever."

"Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale."

And I thought this one would make you laugh, lol:

"Love may not make the world spin around, but it certainly makes a lot of people dizzy."

About me:

I initially started writing free verse, which I love using because I find my work flows more easily and I express myself more openly in free verse.
However lately I find myself using rhyming techniques which seem to be working fairly well so I will be exploring this further.
I still feel I have a long way to go in my development as a poet and joining the All Poetry community will definitely enhance my growth in that respect.

I always welcome commentary on my work, negative and positive, as I feel this gives me a different perspective on my writing.

Take care and be well...
