I have always been fascinated by this most spectacular form of art we have come to call poetry. In it, one's entire thoughts, wishes, emotions, and an aspect of their life is captured in a compression of few, very precisely chosen words. As an artist may capture his soul, or his interpretation of the world unto a canvas with paint, a poet may capture his soul, or his interpretation of the world unto a page with words. I began experimenting with poetry at the age of eleven or twelve, although I wasn't very good, and knew very little of how a poet creates meaningful poems. Although, the inspiration was enough to drive me to learn, and learn I did. At the age of sixteen, I heard John Lennon's Imagine for the first time. I was completely in awe - wondering how someone could capture so much philosophical meaning in a string of rhyming words. Then, at the age of seventeen, I began attempting to create poetry which captured the burst of philosophical musings which had somewhat taken my mind hostage. One morning, it hit me: I had suddenly understood some poetic technique, intuitivey, and ran to gather paper and pen. What came of it was a free-verse poem which logically reduced God to conception and mind, and freed the mind and soul of captivity to such a concept. Then, in my senior year of high school, I began reading wonderful works: some by Wifred Owen, Silvia Plath, John Keats, and William Butler Yeats (my favorite poet). While I was reading these works in my senior english class, I was also taking creative writing, which allowed me to open the creative vent with which I had previously had trouble. And from then on, I began producing poems here and there, whenever the emotions were about to burst, and had nowhere to go, or the thoughts simply urged me to free them onto something. And so I have become a poet, mysel, of sorts, and greatly appreciate and respect the art-form I have become to love.
