REFLECTIONS FROM MOON LADY
November 2009
I've been reading quite a lot of Spanish poetry lately and am particularly fond of the beautiful and passionate words of Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda. Whenever I need a sense of calm and want to escape into poetry, Neruda is often my first choice.
My poem "Into Africa: a Tribute to Dan Eldon" was the recipient of Writing.com's 2008 Quill Award for Best Free-Verse Poem. I feel very honored to have received this award and invite you to read and comment on "Into Africa", which you will find in my list of poems.
ABOUT ME: I retired to a beautiful tropical island off the SW Gulf Coast of Florida in 2008. I enjoy sitting with my notebook by the water under the palms that catch the constant breezes from the bay. From my lanai I'm able to watch dolphins at play, and barnacle-encrusted manatees are drawn to the warmer waters of the lagoon during the day, charming island residents and visitors for hours before moving out to deeper waters in the evening.
In addition to reading and writing poetry, I enjoy historical mysteries, as well as the earth sciences, and learning Spanish conversation. I love the mythology and legends of the British Isles and recently discovered that my Scots-Irish ancestry can be traced all the way back to the Danish Viking warrior, Somerled.
I've played contemporary Native American Flute for 16 years and had the opportunity to personally mentor for a week with NAF recording artist, R. Carlos Nakai (Navajo/Ute), whose beautiful music continues to inspire me. www.rcarlosnakai.com
