My friends...my name is Michael, all though I have always written, I only recently returned to writing poetry after many years. What brought me back to it was how it helped me to release the strong emotions that I felt at a very difficult time of my life.
I have always loved the poetic form. My favourite great poets are John Donne, above all...but also Shakespeare, 'the terrible trio'...Byron, Keats and Shelley...and of more moderns writers...Thomas Hardy and Yeats. Hardy is neglected as a poet, but anyone who can compose a line like...
'Wind oozing thin, through the thorn from norward' has my admiration!!!
The more poetic of today's songwriters are also much admired...Dylan, Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne are favourites but many others like Michael Stipe provide inspirations.
Other inspirations for me are...on the inside, the emotions that brought me back to poetry and on the outside my observations of the joy and pain of life and the beauty of the natural world.
