My hobby is visiting graveyards and ghost towns. I find quiet and inspiration for my poetry in these wonderful places. I, also, take pictures, draw and sketch the scenery and read the headstones, fascinated with the lives of those who have lived and died.
I have many favorite writers but my favorite poet would have to be Emily Dickinson. My 'style' and subjects vary but I have a passion for the english Sonnet. I also try other form poetry too. I love to read free verse but am not too good at writing it.
These are four of my favorite poems on this site:
Stillness (Double Sonnet) written by MargaretG: allpoetry.com/poem/708023

Very special tributes by Claide:
Her Name is Mary
If you ask me a poet, to read
whose words bring the hush of the wind,
of moments that capture the rise of the sea -
of moments that never descend;
whose melodies run like a mustang
or drift with the calm of the clouds;
whose classical tone carries whispers
or secrets that linger in crowds
She's talent you'd never believe...
(If you ask for a poet to read)
What Words Can Never Say
I've nothing more than what can come in words
in which we place the value of our lives
as poets; just as feathers unto birds,
and by these soul expressions we survive
with metaphors which are the way we sing
and similes like tears that fill our eyes
hyper-boles: we take our Phoenix wings
and with a desperate passion, scale the skies.
But who are you that steals away our breath
with verse of fragile eloquence and thought?
Perhaps the peace, like streams, that follows death;
or warmth that saves us from the winter's frost.
No more than words have I to offer you
and ne'er shall they be clear of what they're due.
From Hugh Wyles.
To My Sonnet Queens - Wyleian Sonnaiku LXXII
There are two among my favourites I regard as “Sonnet Queens”;
every sonnet that they write is pure perfection
and, no matter what their subject or what format they adopt,
their iambics are impeccable with solid rhyming sense.
Precious, tempting juicy morsels set among a pile of greens,
are their gems in each new day’s AP selection.
One will rarely find a word that should be edited or dropped
and their grammar’s always faultless, punctuation, style and tense.
succinct sonnets
worthy workmanship
classic creations.
On a number of occasions (not involved in contest scenes),
their inclusion in my Wyleian Collection
I’ve invited and, like cake with special sapid icing topped,
they’ve enhanced the corpus, making my indebtedness immense.
To dear MargaretG and Mary6, both Queens of sonnet art,
send I much love, hugs and kisses. THANKYOU BOTH with all my heart.
Hugh Wyles, June 11th.2005.
I always appreciate any advice or critique so long as it is done with compassion and with the purpose to teach and instruct. I want to learn and grow so input is very much desired, but arrogance is not well tolerated.
I have to say that I really dislike the pasting of my work back in comments unless there is a certain critique on that specific area of work. Thanks to all.

Corey Harvard on October 31, 2006Mary! Haven't spoken to you in quite some time...
I'm running another sonnet contest. I know that I left you and Jim to finish the last one (many apologies), but I'd very much appreciate it if you'd consider judging again. This time, I'm trying to put together a team of good judges (maybe five or six of us). You won't have to comment on every poem, so long as you read them and help judge.
Just throwing that your way. Hope that you can join us!
