"... I am particularly oppressed by one memory of a distant past. It came back vividly to my mind a few days ago, and has remained haunting me like an annoying tune that one cannot get rid of. And yet I must get rid of it somehow. I have hundreds of such reminiscences; but at times some one stands out from the hundred and oppresses me. For some reason I believe that if I write it down I should get rid of it. Why not try?"
-Dostoyevsky, "Notes from Underground"
"I froze.
It was not guilt that froze me. I had taught myself never to feel guilt.
It was not a ghastly sense of loss that froze me. I had taught myself to covet nothing.
It was not a loathing of death that froze me. I had taught myself to think of death as a friend.
It was not heartbroken rage against injustice that froze me. I had taught myself that a human being might as well look for diamond tiaras in the gutter as for rewards and punishments that were fair.
It was not the thought that God was cruel that froze me. I had taught myself never to expect anything from Him.
What froze me was the fact that I had absolutely no reason to move in any direction. What had made me move through so many dead and pointless years was curiosity.
Now even that had flickered out."
-Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., "Mother Night"
"He's turned his life around. He used to be depressed and miserable. Now he's miserable and depressed."
-David Frost
"I'm far too normal for anyone to understand me."
"When in doubt... duhh.. think again."
"If ignorance is bliss, you must be the happiest motherfucker, ever!" -Me

Nice tat! I have...errr...a few. We also say the same thing. I actually told a boss that if ignorance was bliss he was the happiest man alive. I should say EX boss. LOL.
Anyway, nice page. I see you are from La. Hope Katrina did not tear ya up too bad in your neck of the woods. I am now awaiting Wilma. Gotta love hurricane season eh? TTFN
Blessed be

Ilse Witch on September 30, 2005No, your assessment was a good one. I've left quite a few someones I love. It was kind of about knowing that someone is lonely, and knowing it so palpably it seems as though you could feel it from a distance (as if emotions could travel through matter like sound does). Anyhow...you're the first Nola poet I've encountered on AP. I like "Katrina," although I'm guessing it doesn't really begin to cover what you're feeling. I visited earlier this year, and it's hard to reconcile what I saw then with the pictures of what's there now. I hope things get better for you. Best wishes.
