My poetry style is very hard to explain. It's just Hannah. It's very unique, I think atleast.

Just wanted to let you know I think about you and hope you are doing well.

I reiterate, I took no offense that you didn't like my poetry, as you're entitled to your opinion.

What I took offense at is this (and I'm directly quoting, note the line caps):

"ok. so this contest was ridiculous..this one guy entered like a billion poems..and i did not want that..BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT EVEN SLAM...what the hell..but good job to those who actually entered quality stuff."

I'm just curious as to what you think is slam poetry. Believe me, it's more than just acapella rapping/rhyming.

I recommend you check out some of the links I sent you. You might want to start with www.buddywakefield.com. (Buddy Wakefield is the two-time WORLD CHAMPION of the Individual World Poetry Slam)

For the record, whether or not I'm "full of myself," in terms of slam poetry, I actually know what I'm talking about. I've been going to and performing at poetry slams for four years. I'm currently set to go to the National Poetry Slam for my third time amongst 500+ of the best poets in every state of the nation plus Vancouver, Canada and Paris, France as a performing poet on Team Orlando. Every Thursday I slam for three random people who score me with numbers from 1 to 10 with one decimal point based on my performance and writing ability. I've gotten 10s and 2s on the same poem, thus, if I was petty enough to care what others think about my own creations, I would have quit exposing my thoughts, feelings, and creavity onstage literally years ago.

All this said, what I stand for above all else is educating the masses about a genre that remains unknown despite having existed for what is now it's 21st year, as giving credit to countless talented writers and performers. I also coach aspiring slam poets on techniques of performance and writing ability, and expose the works of other gifted writers to anyone (poet or otherwise)curious and willing enough to accept what I have to offer.

    ...including yourself.

i may be "full of myself," but I'm always fair.

I apologize for coming off harsh, but you still never answered my question: "What do you consider 'slam'?"

    -Curtis Meyer

PS I don't mean this as an insult, but out of geniune curiosity: Have you ever slammed (performed poetry live in front of an audience at a poetry slam) before? If not, I'd gladly send you a list of venues in your home region that host poetry slams. (If you find the map of the U.S. on www.poetryslam.com and click on your home state, you'll be led to a list of all the poetry slams in your regions, complete with a list of host venues and dates that said venues host their slams.)

Question: What do you consider "Slam"?

Because in my experience as a slam poet, namely the 2007 Grand Slam Champion of Orlando, Florida's Broken Speech Poetry Slam, and three-time member of Team Orlando at the National Poetry Slam, it's been my understanding that there's really no such thing as "slam" per se, it's just a tag given to poems shared orally onstage for as much as three minutes with a ten second grace period.

I'm not bitter about losing your contest, I just take offense to your quote that my poetry "wasn't even slam." Funny, every audience I've encountered for the last four years seems to think otherwise.

If you think slam is the Hip-Hop-influenced, mostly-rhyming, more-often-than-not-loud-and-yelling fair of Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam as so many do, I fear you're limiting yourself by not exposing yourself to the more image-based writers who have influences broader than songs they hear on the radio. (No offense meant to Hip-Hop poets).

Many of these legends, I.E. the founders of slam, have never been on Def Jam for any number of reasons, but just as there are various styles of poetry, so are there various styles to be shared upon a slam stage.

I commend your look into what history will eventually reveal to be the most important poetic movement since the onset of the beats, but please get your facts straight before becoming an authority who claims awareness about what is and isn't slam poetry.

Please don't take this as a threat. Although I did take offense to your comment, I am more than willing to provide or lead you to any information you may wish to seek regarding how slam works, as well as websites showcasing any number of famous slam poets.
