Something Gained

Maybe myths are more exacting
an experience than we give credit for.
Jove, Apollo, Baldur, Arthur,
all noble, some with misguided intentions,
all fought on in one way or another
through the muddled confusion, the utter pessimism,
becoming the spirits of direction and hope,
both gentle and stern.

How the wolves with steel gray eyes looked
from outside the gates to the inside,
we so wary of them as they of us.

But sometimes, in moments of perplexity and pain,
the purity of becoming makes us reach for certain things,
as when Jesus cried on the cross “Lama Sabachthani.”
We know his heart was locked in a secret wedding.
In that moment he was everyone.

Most lives don’t demand much attention,
even though there is so much tragedy
that goes unaccounted for.
It seems life is a slow, slow erosion,
yet something is gained.

Lovely poem of personal decree on this page!
    A tearful one.
