GENGHIS KHAN
i
I dreamt last night that John died
I didn't know that he was a poet
or that he was in love with her
she who is in love with Genghis Khan
kissing him openly
he kissing her
like a horse slaking its thirst
having run the breadth of the steppes
to drink from the coolest
calmest
sweetest pool of water
ii
who mothered the man
that would conquer half the world?
who held the weanling to her breast
that would muster men and horses
make them into armies
and then make them ride behind him?
who gave him the teat
when all she could expect in return
was the joy of giving?
-and then set him free like a bird on the air
iii
imagine music
a sonata building
into a symphony
more than melancholy
-tempestuous foreboding
each note becomes the cadence of hoof-beats
hail upon iron
a symphony of percussion
out of the East
the music of storm-clouds
riding upon the pride of men and horses
