What I write reflects both my moods and my feelings which are subject to change often and without warning. I have felt that music sometimes is better at conveying my feelings until now. Now I have decided to try expressing them here.
If you don't like what I write you should exercise your given right to not read more of it. However if you can help me to become a better writer by giving me constructive comments, tips, advice, etc., I would appreciate it.
The Look
>
> by Robert A. Chant
>
>
> I have seen that look before, the look of total fear.
> When some people choose to see, only how I appear.
>
> I just sit and watch, as they begin to point and stare.
> And never will they see just me, but always see my chair.
>
> They feel such pity, for what they think they see.
> As if they're watching a life, so filled with tragedy.
>
> Some of them glance so quick, and then try to ignore.
> Oh I have seen that look, many, many times before.
>
> I witnessed pity shown, by the expression on their face.
> They can't hide their feelings, even as they try to erase.
>
> I guess they can't help their reaction, so I must not blame.
> But I hate that look, when they think my life's a shame.
>
> They think they are more fortunate, when the look at me.
> But only because my wheelchair, is the only thing they see.
>
> Some will come and patronized, while others, they will shun.
> And the hurt will always remain, the damage has been done.
>
> I speak with few words, in fact you would think I am shy.
> But I know people don't listen to me, so I don't even try.
>
> They talk as if I'm invisible, like I am not even there.
> I may not know everything, but of one thing I'm aware.
>
> I know that I understand, how little they really know.
> And that look of pity on their face, will always show.
>
> They can't look past and get to know, the person deep inside.
> They never see the real me, the part this chair can't hide.
>
> I want them to know I have a mind, I am capable of love.
> I have lots of hopes and desires, and things I dream of.
>
> I know my legs may be useless, I may travel by wheel.
> But my mind can still think, and my heart can feel.
>
> And everyday I meet people, even more handicapped than me.
> Because the wonderful person I am, they are just too blind to see.
>
> And when I try to talk to them, they don't even seem to hear.
> And there's not a crutch, that can help a body paralyzed by fear.
>
> I see a sad disability in each, one that in me you'll never find.
> A disability of their choosing, cause by weakness of their mind.
>
> And in this live I have been given, one thing I've come to know.
> I can travel anywhere, my mind will take me where I wish to go.
>
> I can hike to the ends of this world, or soar towards the sky.
> My thoughts have become my legs, and even enabled me to fly.
>
> So please don't be sorry for me, because the way you think I'm
livin'.
> Because I am just so thankful for, this life that I have been given.
>
> I really don't want your pity, that's something I just don't expect.
> But I ask for common courtesy, and some much deserved respect.
>
> And if you can look beyond the fact, that I spend my days in a chair.
> You'll be surprise to discover, there is a real person living there.
>
>
> To open yourself, even to people who are very close, is risky. Such
> is the
> worldly teaching. That's why everybody has become closed. Nobody
opens
> one's petals fearlessly like a flower, dancing in the wind, and in
> the rain, and
> in the sun... so fragile but without any fear. We are all living
> with closed petals,
> afraid that if we open up we will become vulnerable. The first step
> is, never

I have a disability, Spina Bifida to be exact and use a wheelchair. The above poem expresses exactly how I feel people view me and others with disabilities on a daily basis. Having volunteered through Courage Center and providing new volunteers being trained in with a little background into my disability, I now try to do that in my everyday life when out with friends or family, at work, here on AP, etc. Anything you would like to know, just ask! I am open about all of it when the time to share is appropriate (in other words, the more I get to know you, the more I will share). I am mentioning this only because this is something else that my poetry may reflect.
