Poets and their works should evolve with time; with pain and suffering, the wisdom is revealed that could never have existed in the earlier work. A poet who shows no sign of such revelations and transitions is no poet at all. Even if it appears stilted, disjointed, that alteration of self must be apparent in the fluctuations and currents of the written word.
My early poetry--prior to the summer of 1986--was written as I struggled with my sexuality as a gay youth and young adult. My poems took on a new direction, as I learned how to love others. It took longer to learn how to love myself. Most of the love poems were written more for myself, though they were delivered (never in person) to the intended recipients.
After my first relationship ended badly, I found myself wallowing in depression again, this time worse than it was before I came out to myself.
I am sad to say that I've written too little in recent years; my inner poet does wake, often at the most unexpected times. I try to encourage him, but one should never shake a Muse too hard. You never know what sort of drivel they'll feed you then!
I also write prose--short stories--and with that I've tackled another aspect of myself: my testing positive for HIV. The only poems which I've written that deal with HIV/AIDS are in memory of the man who unknowingly passed it on to me, and one which I'm still working on for my cousin who passed in June 2005. Someday, I'll write one for me.
