I was born in NJ. Both my parents are immigrants from Switzerland and Germany. I, myself, am a first generation American Citizen, and am proud of my Swiss, American heritage.
When I finished high school in 1981, I went on to college in Vermont, Johnson State College. I graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Arts. In 1987 I continued my studies in New York City at School Of Visual Arts. I received a degree in Fine Arts and with honors in 1990.
I have to admit life has not been easy for me. In my first years of college, I did not really know what to study. Art was a last resort. I actually picked up a brush when I was about 22 years old, and found I had some ability for it. I seemed to be a late bloomer in everything I tried for.
Writing poetry was one thing far away from me at this time. Here and there I tried it, but nothing really seemed to develop. I was working on getting a life started for myself at this time.
About four or five years ago, I entered a contest just out of curiosity. I had written a poem in college for an art project. I prided myself for that poem because I never thought I would do anything like this. To my surprise Poetry.com selected it. I didn’t know what I got myself into at the time, but the excitement of it all got me interested a little in writing.
One can surprise yourself sometimes in life on what you’re capable of doing if you just try new things here and there. I do work full time so finding the extra time to write is difficult. When there is a free moment I do try to create a new poem or at least jot my ideas down for the next time.
I continue to write poetry and enjoy it. I do have to say I am a self taught writer. What ever I know about poetry, I learned online and just practical writing experiences.
Other things I like are playing tennis, photography, art, volleyball, and computers.
