Merry meet all,
Finally my first contest. This is a Science Fiction and a Science Fantasy Contest.
The definitions are as follows:
Science Fiction: In the vein of Star Trek, Andromeda, Serenity, Stargate SG1, Stargate-Atlantis, Star Wars, Gundum Seed, Marrion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series, etc....
Science Fantasy: Harry Potter, Eragon series, LOTR series, Anne McCaffery's Pern series, Kushiel's Legacy series, Naomi Novik's Temeraire, Full Metal Alchemist, etc....
These are guidelines only, please do not feel that you are limited to these for your choices.
Rules
Because every society must have them.
1). No more than 2 poems per poet. If a pre-write is entered it MUST have a fresh write to go with or it WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. I will check.
2). Spell check is a must. Use it. It's there for a reason. Please read your poem after entering to make sure of homonym mistakes and punctuation consistency.
3). Poems MUST be marked critical to be considered.
4). Please place in your Author's Notes which category your poem is in. You will be IM'd once and given a chance to fix it, otherwise it will not be considered.
5). NO erotica-it will be deleted. Let's keep this so that all ages may be consider and read the work submitted.
6). I will make notes as the contest goes along and poems are entered. I will make no comments until after the contest is closed.
7). Please read each others work and comment if you desire, it's good karma and nice manners. (I really can't enforce this nor will I, but let's be nice.)
8). Please do not give me lots of vampires or werewolves. There is a whole universe to play with, stretch people.
9). I prefer free-verse. I do not feel competent to judge other forms. You may enter them, but I will not comment on the form, just content and what I think.
10). These are my opinions and only that. My decision's are final.
11). Just so that I know that you understand what I am asking you to do, please place "Science is fun!" in your Author's Notes.
12). Let's have some fun!!
The fun stuff:
1st place- a shiny intergalactic gold pressed latinum trophy and 300 pts.
2nd place- a slightly less shiny silver laminated trophy and 75 pts.
3rd place- a rather mundane, but just as impressive bronze trophy and 50 pts.
Honorable Mentions: a possibility.
If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Note: I reserve the right to close this early, if I deem it necessary.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on August 4, 2006
- Rewards: Gold: 375
- Final notes: Merry meet all my contestants,
You surely did not make this easy for me. I thank you for that. First and Second place were a real struggle for me. I finally got down to just which I liked more, again a really hard choice to make. Unfortuantely there were some who did not read the rules and despite of how good their poem might have been, they were out of running for a win.
I will comment on each poem, so please do not remove them until I do so, or no comments.Entries [6]

I've never seen Harry Potter being described as "science fantasy".

Great contest idea! The rules aren't too restrictive for having so many. Most of them are just common sence anyway. Then again some people don't have any of that. See I wrote you a fresh write FIRST then threw in a prewrite cuase I loves ya
. I can't wait for other people to enter, I wanna comment darn it!

Merry meet Skylar,
I put Harry Potter in the Fantasy class because of the dragons, trolls, gnomes, ect. If it had just been the spells and ect. I would have put in the Fiction catagory. Thanks for asking and giving me a chance to clarify. I hope that you enter.

Merry meet Fausta,
Thank you for your entries and for following the rules. I'm glad that you like my "rules", I was afraid they might be too restrictive, but I didn't want a whole mess of pre-writes without any fresh, but I didn't hink it was fair to excllude them because there are some really great prewrites that haven't had the chance to be seen in awhile either.
thanks again for your entries.
Amythest
p.s. please mark your pre-write as critical or I will not be able to judge it. Thanks again.

Actually I was protesting the "science" part.
-
I do not see how "The Lord of the Rings" can really be called "SCIENCE fantasy".
Harry Potter could, I think, JUST qualify - but only just...
And why ask competitors to say which "option" they have chosen? Surely it should be obvious from the poem itself. -
Merry meet Skylar,
the science refers to the fact that cars, phones, ect., things that run on science are in the book. This is the same reason McCaffery's Pern series is listed in that catagory. I hope I cleared that up for you.

Merry meet Vera,
I used the Science Fantasy catagory as a more or less catch all catagory as opposed to dividing it in to more catagories that could get confusing. As to having them place the catagory, if you write a poem, you should have no problem with which catagory it falls under, if your not sure, how am I suppose to decide, especially with the Science Fantasy as a catch all catagory?
Thanks for commenting and I hope you'll enter.

Merry meet HasiWick,

I only wanted to say that I like your rules very much! You have covered all the important items, and without sounding like a stuffed shirt! I wish I could do that.. LOL. Hope you enjoy your contest!

Merry meet Toots,
Thank you very much for your sweet comments on the rules. What I did was write down what I wanted as my rules and then had my daughter (Bellatrix De Winter) go over them for me. I also remembered the rules I liked in other contests that I had been in and then just used my own words as if I was just talking to someone in person. Thank you again for your sweet comment.

Merry meet azure85,
Thank you for your entry and for following the rules. When you go to enter your poem there is a box that asks if your wanting a critical comment on your poem. Try going bac to you poem, click the edit button, then read the form carefully for the box. If you still have trouble let me know. Technically, since you did atl least put the critical in the author's notes, I'm okay with that because you have asked for the information to do it properly. I do suggest that you try to find it and mark, this way you'll know where it is for other contests.

Merry meet Cover Fire Hero,
Thank you for your entry. Please check the contest rules and do the appropiate requirements for consideration in the contest. You have until the close of this contest to enter a fresh write for this to be considered. Thank you.

Great idea for a contest but I hate it when we have to do so many things just to enter
Even if you read the rules, you don't feel like entering as you'll have to take the trouble of putting "Science is fun!" in your authors comment box (I'm lazy)and I always forget that I've kept that in there and it passes on to the next contest
I have entered one prewrite but I don't have time to write a new one.I'll try but I don't think I'll be able to make it, so if you want to dq me.You can go ahead
Thanks for the wonderful idea for the contest but no thanks for the rules
Best of luck with the judging

Merry meet bob Greene,
Thank you for your entry. Please mark your poem critical and check what I need in your author's box. You have until the closing of the contest. If you do not, then I afraid that I won't be able to consider your poem.
Thanks
Amythest -
Merry meet Silverlininng,
Thank you for your entry. Please check to see what other requirement I need to be able to consider your poem. You have until the contest closes.
Thank's for the entry.

I think I added in the requirement, I altered it as I realised and as saw your message.
I did try at first to keep it free verse but I gave up as it started to develop rhyming couplets.
