N.B.Before you begin reading what I believe, I need to make something clear. It seems that some ppl take issue with what I believe and who I say I am. I'm fine with that. Just temper your logic with coolness. In other words, don't get all angry or hyped up. Some ppl get mad at me when I respond to their criticism and arguments therein with a taste of my own logic. Be warned: a debate may begin between you and me. Don't let it escalate into an argument so that I have to put you on my ignore list. I've had to do that with some ppl who just couldn't calm down and stop swearing. If I don't understand you right off the bat, please don't call me close-minded or such things. It DOES NOT help the situation. I have several...ah...ppl not so happy with me on AP. Please don't put yourself there. Respect me, and I'll respect you. Thank you, and hope you enjoy my writing and thoughts!!

"The man that hath no music in himself,

Nor is not mov'd with concord of sweet sounds,

Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils;

The motions of his spirit are dull as night,

And his affections dark as Erebus.

Let no such man be trusted. Mark the music."

The Merchant of Venice, Act V, Scene I

So Shakespeare, perhaps one of the world's foremost authorities on poetry, expresses a statement true to all who appreciate the written form of beauty- poetry. Yet, what makes his work official "poetry"? What makes it art? Did someone say, "Oh, Shakespeare wrote lots of plays that are tough to understand, so we'll call him a poet"? Does quantity determine poetry? Or quality? What is poetry?

So will I begin the essay which I am ONE DAY going to write (yes, I am a shameless procrastinator) on poetry. What does make good poetry? How did you earn the title 'poet'? Or have none of us earned it yet? Did you just say, "There's nothing to rhyming words, I'll try my hand at this", or were you exceptionally eloquent at expressing your emotions in an artlike form?

I am going to refer to poetry, music, and visual art in the same breath because I believe they are all forms of art. My next question is, what is art? Some say it's a bunch of paintings of dead, naked people. Others have a slightly more refined definition. Take a moment to find your definition of art. Your definition must include all forms of art, but only the the forms of art. Nothing else. It must also be reversible. That is, if your definition is "Art is x", you must be able to switch everything around and have it still mean the same thing, e.g., "x is art".

Took you a while, didn't it?

Now, read this problem and try to solve it, according to your definition of art.

You are the curator of a small art museum in a little seaside town. You have few visitors and are running low on funds. Then, one day, a well-known artist comes to vacation in your town. As you take your morning walk down the beach, you suddenly confront this artist on his morning jog. You, in desperation, explain your museum's situation and beg him for a new piece that would draw attention and much-needed funding to your museum. He smiles, bends down, and picks up a piece of driftwood off the beach. "Here," he says. "Call it 'Driftwood'." What do you do? Accept or reject it?

This one is a toughie. I will leave you to determine your own answer. Just a hint from my perspective: I don't believe it's art. I believe a work of art is just that, a work of art. Someone had to put time and effort into it and be skilled at what they were doing. If you're still not quite sure, then good! It means you're genuinely trying to puzzle it out. Keep it up!

Here is a working definition of art I've put together. It's most definitely biased, and you don't have to agree with it. Art is a product or process by which an aesthetic object, enviornment, or experience is skillfully created. This is an important note: I am a Christian, convinced by God and through faith that what the Bible teaches is the truth. Don't worry- I'm not going to try and "convert" you! I am simply going to explain what I believe and why I believe it. I am also going to comment on several things I feel very strongly about. Don't get me wrong- I don't know everything about my beliefs; I'm not a theologian- but I will defend my faith! It is an essential skill to know what you believe and be able to defend it before the world. Artemis Gem and SITW, feel free to join in whenever you feel like it (I'm going to need your help SITW- you know what I'm talking about). Please do not take personal offense against what might be said. I oppose the ideas, not you personally. I am a student philosopher only trying to hone my belief of the truth.

Before you read further, there is a sort of exension to this that I felt is not yet ready to be posted here. It is currently at http://allpoetry.com/poem/2502231 . Read about my views on Civil War...

Please continue!!

I am a wannabe outspoken against the public school system. I believe it to be a necessary evil but that it is not worth the effort put into it. I believe that we are pouring money into a bottomless hat that will never produce the rabbit. A return to the schooling methods of the Middle Ages is what may save our society. If you are interested in the way I believe the public school system should be set up, go to this website: www.gbt.org/text/sayers.html . Note: I went to this page for the article alone. I am not advocating GBT or anyone but Dorothy Sayers and her article.

I believe that the public school system was an excellent idea. The idea that a whole society could read, write and figure has tremendous connotations for the growth and preservation of said society. But, to teach everyone to read write and figure, you must cater to the lowest standard there is. In other words, everyone can learn at a different pace. To equalize everyone's learning, you must teach at the pace of the slowest learning person in the class. For this reason, the quality of PS (public school) education is not as good as private school, where there is a higher standard that everyone must meet.

My other problem with the public school is the material that is taught, particularly in science( AG, get vocal!). I am a firm creationist; not a deist, not an evolutionist. I will not back down from my belief that God created the universe from nothing in the space of seven days and that He is still in control. Try and shake me. However much the PS teachers say that evolution is a theory, however much the textbooks say that evolution is a theory and a theory alone, they treat evolution as if it is fact. Now I am going to puzzle your brain. I believe in evolution! But I make a distinction. I believe in microevolution; that animals will genetically adapt to slightly different environments. But I do not believe in macroevolution; that is that an entire species can evolve into another species. Do you want to believe that you naturally came from a puddle of slime? I don't. I would rather believe that I was made from dirt by an all powerful God who knew what he was doing. Slime or dirt. Interesting choice. So I will distinguish between macro- and microevolution. Macro-evolutionists say that abundant evidence exists for their cause. But does it? Examine your textbook more closely. You will find phrases like "must have come from" and "had to have". Can you guess why? They have no other option! They have no evidence that such a link can or was made, only that it "must have happened" because otherwise they must admit there is a God!

I have a true story. My former science teacher has a friend who is also a scientist; a biologist to be exact. We'll call him 'Frank'. Frank used to have a pass to examine the artifacts in the basements of the Smithsonian museum in Washington, D.C. One day, he noticed something strange. The museum had laid out several skulls from early humans and had prepared them to go on display. Frank noticed that the jaws of the skulls were slid about an inch forward from where they were originally jointed to the skull. This gave the front of the skull the appearance of a "muzzle" similar to an ape's. When he pointed out what he thought was a simple mistake, his pass was revoked and he was thrown out of the museum! I don't know about you, but this makes me suspicious about the "evidence" of macroevolution I see floating about. Have the jaw-pins been moved forward on us? I'll leave you with my conclusions.

To my point of view, macro-evolution is just as much of a "religion" as creationism is. Macro-evolution was reached through inductive reasoning, which, as all logic students know, can never produce absolute certainty. No matter how many times you "prove" it, you can never say it is absolute truth. The macro-evolutionists believe in their THEORY as much as we Christians believe in our God. That much is deductive reasoning, which produces absolute truth.

*********************************************************************************************************************

Another thing I radically oppose is the "you believe what you want to believe, and I'll believe what I want to believe" junk called post-modern philosophy. Why? Because it is the most ridiculous thing mankind has so far managed to produce. I will attack the two sides I see to it differently.

First off, if you are a pronounced atheist, let me tell you right now- you do worship something! It's just not the God you think you aren't worshiping. You have turned money into your god, or fame or success or happiness or whatever- the point is, you have a god you worship! It could be (and probably is) yourself. You don't want to attribute your existence to a God, whoever he may be. And if you seriously believe evolution (and I will be amazed if you're still reading after the last section), you just might think that. Let me give you an imagined scenario.

Imagine you have a lump of modeling clay before you. You have an incredible artistic ability and are an excellent sculptor. Using this modeling clay that you lovingly made by hand, you sculpt a village with tiny, beautifully made people. Then (this is a long stretch of the imagination, but try it), you zap the people with lightning and they come to life. You carefully construct a world atop a piece of cardboard for them to live on- a terrarium of sorts. You grow them grass and give them cattle and air and sunlight and water, everything you knew they would need. You tell them in a whisper that sounds like thunder to them that you made them and that you would like to live in harmony with them forever more. They spitefully refuse and immediately set about pretending that you never existed. They teach their children that you are not real, and that they and their small world have existed forever. After you repeatedly warn them about the consequences of rebelling against you and forgetting you, they keep on doing it. You fall silent and think. What are you going to do?

I don't know about you, but I would destroy them and their puny world in one slap of my fist, screaming, "Now you know I exist!" And that is what I believe the God of the Bible has every right to do to you and me. He made us, we have rebelled against him, but instead of destroying us, He has sent us his son. Now I promised I wouldn't try to "convert" you, and I won't. It's a decision you must make for yourself. But this is what I believe, and in reading what I've written, you've in a sense promised to consider what I believe. If you take the time and examine the evidence (as I have), you will undoubtedly arrive to the conclusion that, at least, there is a God. Look inside yourself. Deep deep down, I think you do know that there is a God. Try it.

Now, how about you folks who think that "you believe what you want to believe, and I'll believe what I want to believe" stuff? Well, I've got news for you: you probably don't have a worldview yet! Most people I've met use that phrase to defend the fact that they're not quite sure what they believe. Keep hunting. I hope you'll find what I believe is the truth. However, if you really believe that there is no absolute truth, you have an inconsistency even in your statement: the one absolute truth for you is that there is no absolute truth! You're also forcing your BELIEF that there is no absolute truth on others, the thing that your philosophy is trying to prevent! Your system of thought has defects and I would really encourage you to rethink that statement.

I have a different take on the "energy crisis" than some ppl do. I don't believe it's happening, and that the world's supply of oil will last us many more years. The problem is the refineries. If we built more of them, we wouldn't have such a problem. However, I do believe we should reduce our dependence on foreign oil. It's our greatest weakness. So, I think we nedd two forms of alternate energy: electrical energy and fuel for our vehicles and things.

We consume so much of the world's energy it's not even funny. So what do we do to create a power source that produces more energy than is put into it? NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS!!! They are relatively safe, produce no harmful emissions and produce massive amounts of energy. Of course, everyone believes tehy are dangerous. But they aren't! We will not have another Chernobyl just waiting to happen on our hands. The Chernobyl workers were relatively ignorant and did not know how to shut down the reactor before it was too late. Workers at the American power plants know exactly what to do in an emergency. They drill in preparation and can shut down a plant before it goes too far. Thus, an explosion, with properly trained and informed workers, is hardly likely.

The other argument I hear the most is that nuclear power plants produce dangerous radioactive waste. Let me ask you- have you ever driven across Nevada or Utah? Thousands and thousands of miles of completely empty terrain- we won't use it because there's no water, and it's a million miles from anywhere! Thus, we could bury our waste in an area with no ecological effects. OK, so we might have a radioactive tumbleweed or two, but so what? Glowing tumbleweeds rolling past in the dark... Yucca mountain works, too.

Now, we come to the need for a fuel source. Bio-diesel isn't enough- how much vegetable drippings can McDonald's produce? It won't run all our vehicles. Green energy or whatever it's called might work- so will electric cars. In short, I think a medley of different types of vehicles are called for. With this combination of different fuel sources, we won't need as much oil as we have. So the solution for the future is: Nuclear power and a medley of different fuels!

Abortion- one of today's most debated topics. Is it morally permissible to destroy a fetus \in utero\? Well, I think not. The very terms we use- kill a fetus, destroy a fetus- imply a sense of death and killing. The word 'abortion' implies the end of something- a life. See? Even its namers have titled it for what it is- a murder. Also, studies have shown that a baby's heart beats as early on six weeks old. They breathe early, too. Can you kill a living, breathing creature and not call it murder? Let me be more clear. The debate is centered around this issue: when does a human become a human? Pro-choice say only at birth. Pro-life say in the womb. Who's right? Well, I have a question for the pro-choice advocates: when a child is being born, right before birth, are they human? Or can they be killed even while in the birth canal? Some pro-choice people say that only when a fetus is fully formed or alive can it be considered human. I say nay. A child is constantly changing and growing, and they continue even outside the womb. They are not fully formed when they leave the womb. Even so,I believe it is murder to destroy an unborn fetus. Ti is a moral issue that must be dcided soon, and I beleive the Supreme Court has already got in wrong. Actually, in those Supreme Court cases where women supposedly wanted abortions, the women represented have told the public that they were misunderstood. They did not want abortions.

I believe one excellent way to end abortion is to end the cavortings that lead up to abortion. Most abortions occur because a girl is scared of her parents discovering her relationship to whomever the father is. If this were to end, a drastic number of abortions would end. Morality and abstinence, which this culture is rapidly losing, would halt this tide of murders. I cannot wait for the day which I hope will arrive in which the government will ban abortions and end this destruction of the potential future generation.

Well, I can only type so much before my hands fall off, and my wrists are looking pretty thin. I am going to use this page as a "blog" of sorts. It's not daily, but it's my opinions on everything. Once again, this is my opinion on other's BELIEFS, not on other ppl. If you are still reading, please do not take offense. I oppose the ideas, not you personally. If you can bear it, come back soon! I will soon have out some more thoughts for you to chew, including my views on the Iraq War (hint: I'm 4 Bush!). Till then, TTFN! TaTaForNow!*boing boing boing boing*

Well...reading everything on your site took me quite a while...lol.

Aya-san, I, for one, do not believe in God for the time being, because of the crazy things my mother tells me. But, I do know that I believe in people, because they're all working hard to fix this planet to be better for the rest of us people. I also believe in the Big Bang, and I was telling my friend that that's what created the Universe, and then he said, "God created the Big Bang." Now, I researched the Big Bang, and I read that it was due to the explosion of an atom? Was it He that caused the explosion? Because I do not know many facts about Athiestism (if that's a word) neither do I know much about religion, and that is why I remain neutral, because I can't support something without any evidence. That is why I chose to read your views on this, to consider choosing a side.

Also, on how you view art, I completely agree. But, about the museum and the artist that the curator met, I contradict your opinion that the stick he picked up was not art. BUT, on the other hand, I believe in the quote, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Now, the curator might not look at the stick as art, but the artist will. Now, I believe what I am about to say will totally confuse what I previously said. The stick, if you look at it quite closely, and through the eyes of a true artist, you'll find that every little detail seems it took effort to grow and take the shape that it is in now. You said that art is something that takes time and effort and skill. Wouldn't God be the one that would have done that?

See, seven days may not seem like enough time when a whole universe is being buil. Seven days equals 168 hours. How much can YOU do in 168 hours? I'm sure if you put your heart and mind into something, it CAN be done in seven days. Like the universe was built in seven days ^_~

Now, Aya-san, I am going to ask you a very deep and meaningful question, one that might change my life forever.

    How old are you?

    ~Kurai Yume
