CharmkinShow poetry

I've written poetry for years, but most of what I write is pretty personal, so I usually keep my poems to myself. I'm sharing them here because I would love to hear feedback on what others like/don't like about my poems. Please, let me know!

Here's a favorite poem of mine, "We Wear the Mask", by Paul Laurence Dunbar (this is also where I think I got the idea for my poem, "Masquerade" ) :c )

\We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,--
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be overwise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!\

    For those who care, I've moved from Seattle to New York, where I'm working as a full-time volunteer with homeless 18-21 year olds. It's a challenge, but I love my job!
