Hello;
My apologies in advance. I think poetry is important in general. Poetry is important to me in particular. Certain poems have helped me get through some difficult times in my life. Unfortunately I have a lot of prejudices as to what makes a good poem. If I don't like one of yours and say so please forgive me. You know what they say about opinions, "everybody's got one".
I have read a lot of Bukowski and am much influenced by him. Many poets hate his work and I dare say he didn't care much for the work of others. Other poets I enjoy are Billy Collins, and Hayden Curruth. On this site I enjoy fennison, emmyb, and charcoal quite a bit. check them out.
I think clarity of meaning is most important, more important than structure. However a poem has to have some structure, meter at a minimum, otherwise it is just prose. A poem is supposed to reveal something. A poem should lead to an insight of some kind. A poem should be as true to your experience as you can make it otherwise it is just cultural propaganda. A poem should have something original to say. Kittens are cute and love often hurts....Duh! A good poem has the power to change the readers outlook on life.
I think politics is a sucker game nine times out of ten and religion a sucker game ten times out of ten. As much as I try to avoid both topics I am inevitably drawn into ultimately pointless discussions about them.
Some people take offense at how I express myself. I come from a working class family and am used to a degree of verbal violence some people find to be too much. Again my apologies I don't mean anything personnel by it. I understand that an artist has a huge emotional investment in his/her work yet still the work has to go out in the world and live or die on it's own merits.
So if you don't like what I have to say feel free to drop me a line and tell me why I am wrong. Thanks for reading this.

When I need to shake up my muse
I stop by here for some sound poetry
Others should do the some
You always seem to be two steps
ahead of me,
but I’m catching up.
So look out!
You’re a good friend.

ea on June 22As she laughed I was aware of becoming involved in her laughter and being part of it, until her teeth were only accidental stars with a talent for squad-drill. I was drawn in by short gasps, inhaled at each momentary recovery, lost finally in the dark caverns of her throat, bruised by the ripple of unseen muscles. An elderly waiter with trembling hands was hurriedly spreading a pink and white
checked cloth over the rusty green iron table, saying: “If the lady and gentleman wish to take their tea in the garden, if the lady and gentleman wish to take their tea in the garden...” I decided that if the shaking of her breasts could be stopped, some of the fragments of the afternoon might be collected, and I concentrated my attention with careful subtlety to this end.
Hysteria by T. S. Eliot -
AiyanaCoen : A simple thought and response... on June 21It is certainly true that an unoriginal poem can be terribly annoying, but although poetry is as anything else an art and there are certain things to all arts that make the subject either wonderful or awful, if it is the first time you have had a particular feeling and wish to express it as artistically as possible yet are not among the most talented poets it does not necessarily mean your work is poor.
I, for one, am not qualified to judge the quality of a poem, so I do not mean the comment as an argument; only that since I am among the people who do not actually have a great deal of knowledge concerning the rules, history, and methods of poetry, I rather enjoy it immensely and am often inspired to write the simple words and emotions which entertain my life and mind. I wish to congratulate anyone who at least makes at an attempt at creating from their 'cliche' experiences a piece of art.
Of course, it does not mean the poem will qualify as appropriate for a trophy, as we certainly are not all 'winners', but cheers anyway for all of us who love poetry and wish to add what little beauty we have to share.
