Budart : Originality on June 21I often forget the therapeutic motive for creating things. People write or draw or paint to get things off their chest or to be able to understand themselves better. People create things as a way of documenting their experience. In either case originality isn't really necessary. I make stuff like this all the time. I would argue however that such work is probably best left out of the public eye. That is what sketch books and diaries are for. You might share them with friends and family but not the general public.
When you take a piece of work and show it to the general public I believe we are making a claim about the work. That it is worth being taken seriously and that the viewer will get something out of their interaction with the work. In the modern age we put great value on originality. I think it is inevitable that if you show work in public people are going to judge it partly on how original it is either in theme or in execution. This site is a pretty public place.
I have my doubts about very young people's ability to make original art. They just don't have enough life experience or insight or perspective to say anything new or interesting. (I realize how insanely unpopular this opinion probably is.) And of course there is always the young genius that would make this opinion sound ridiculous.
Finally I want to say that I am not trying to discourage you. If you are a real artist you are compelled to do what you do and my opinion is completely irrelevant. You must believe in your own work and not worry too much about what other people think. Great artists are almost always misunderstood and under appreciated in their own time.
