Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia - EL Doctorow

I know I'm a writer, but I'm not so sure if I qualify as a poet.

I have always looked upon the arts as a voice, an expression to reveal my inner thoughts and desires and this zeal for poetry started at a very young age. Over the years it has slowly nurtured into a passion that would be difficult to capture in words and today, it has become a safe route to escapism.

I am aware that I am one of those writers who need to be inspired. Whether it may be through books, other people’s poetry, stimulating contests or even my own life. I am in constant search of things to storm my muse. I have gone through several phases – as most poets do, swinging from passionate erotica to dark and morbid abuse.

I almost never edit and I am not proud of the fact. My poems usually act as a barometer for my current state of mind and although a poem “doesn’t flow well” or a phrase doesn’t “sound right”, it still goes on record because I am an imperfect poet and I enjoy being reminded of the same.
Never the less, critiques are never taken at surface value and I thrive on negative critiques especially if they are from someone who knows what they are talking about. Critical comments have taught me that I cannot express myself through rhyming poetry; and that uninhibited free verse is appreciated when written with an abandoned conscience.

I mainly write in free verse. I think form poetry is artificially developed as it concentrates on the 'best words in the best order' and not unfiltered emotions. This doesn't mean that I discredit form writers, but prose appeals to me as an individual because it is less constructed and more reflective of my personality.
In a 1915 preface to the first Imagist anthology, Richard Aldington wrote, "We do not insist upon 'free verse' as the only method of writing poetry. We fight for it as a principle of liberty."

 I got published!!

I have been published as part of Eyes Of The Poet that is an anthology comprised of over 50 poets from nine countries.
The editors Douthit and Robertson "chose each of the poems for their individual style, the wonderful imagery they create, their lush use of language, or the ideas and thoughts they bring forth in the reader.

Eyes Of The Poet: Love and Passion in Lasting Splendor is currently available in both
hardcover
and paperback through the wholesaler Ingram, lulu.com, amazon.com and participating retail outlets.

To know more about the anthology read D P Robertson's column,
