Poems are like bodies of water. Rivers flow downstream, constantly in one direction. The ocean beats the shore from one moment to the next, with this rhythm swaying gradually with the tide's ebb and flow. If you find yourself lost at sea, the wind and waves will push and pull you to some random destination, or perhaps you will just float and be consumed by your own thirst and hunger.
It's all water, just as the myriad poetical forms are all poems. Not all poems must rhyme, and not all rhymes are poems, but a sonnet is a poem, and a sonnet must rhyme. The waves must beat the shore. Elsewhere, a choppy series of words drips from the paper onto the floor, down the stairs and out the door, like the rivulets that flow down the cracks in the sidewalk after a sudden storm.
I appreciate the ocean, and the rivers, lakes, and streams. It's all good.
If you want not to read bad poetry, always carry an umbrella.

half-drunk muse on October 30, 2005I am also new to AP. I thought that I would go through the most recent poems submitted each day and comment, hoping someone would comment on mine in return. However, it hasn't happened that way. So just now I decided to check out everyones pages(people online, you are my first. I don't regret clicking on your name as I do some. Your page is beautiful, and if you'll excuse me, I'm going to read your work. Have a good night.
